These are essentially static rollers whereby the pressure on the ground can be altered by changing the tyre pressure. In this way, the machines achieve a kneading effect which effectively seals the asphalt surface. Pneumatic tyred rollers are predominantly used for asphalt compaction, but sometimes are used in earthwork construction.

Dynamic compaction systems accelerate the rolling process. Vibrations on the surface lead to an increase in the density of the mineral aggregate. This can be achieved by two different systems –

(A) Vibration – vibratory compaction causes the asphalt mix or the soil layer to vibrate by vertically bouncing the drums on the ground in rapid succession. These vertical forces cause the grains to move, resulting in them to re-arrange in a denser position. In this way, compaction is reduced significantly.

(B) Oscillation - this process only produces 10% of the vibration-related stresses on the environment that are generated when compacting with vibration. In contract to vibration , the full static weight of the drum rests on the material during the entire operation ensuring fast and gentle compaction.
